PARTY ENROLLMENT

There are presently three political parties in Massachusetts:

  1. Democratic Party                     3. Libertarian
  2. Republican Party

If you enroll in any of these parties, you may vote only  in that party's primary.

Enrollment in a political party does not affect your right to vote in the general elections. In the general election, all voters receive the same ballot and vote for the candidate of their choice regardless of party affiliation.

If you do not wish to enroll in a party, check the box beside "no party" or "unenrolled" on the registration form. If you choose the "unenrolled" status, you may choose any party ballot at the state and presidential primaries.

In addition to the three political parties listed above, there are a number of "political designations" which are listed below. If you enroll in a political designation, you may NOT vote in any state or presidential primary. The political designations are:

  1. Conservative Party
  2. Natural Law Party
  3. New World Council
  4. Reform Party
  5. Rainbow Coalition
  6. Green Party USA
  7. We the People
  8. Green Rainbow
  9. Constitution Party
  10. Timesizing Not Downsizing
  11. New Alliance Party
  12. Prohibition Party
  13. American Independent Party
  14. Socialist
  15. Interdependent 3rd Party
  16. America First Party
  17. Veterans Party America
  18. World Citizens Party

You may change your enrollment status by notifying the Elections Office in writing or download the "Change of Party" form (53kb PDF) and mail it to the office. By law, you must sign your name to this change of enrollment status.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE LAWS

Candidates and committees in town elections file as many as four campaign finance reports in an election period: one eight days prior to the Preliminary Election, a second eight days prior to the Town Election and a third due on or before thirty days after the election. The fourth is the Year-End report which must be filed every year so long as a committee is in existence, or a candidate maintains a campaign fund, has outstanding debts, or is an incumbent elected official. Schedule E (Disclosure of Assets) must also be filed at this time in order for the report to be considered complete. The reports are filed at the Elections Office.

Campaign Finance Report CPF M 102 must include all money raised since the last report, total expenditures for the period, in-kind contributions and all outstanding liabilities.

The filing requirements apply to all candidates. Even those who do not raise or spend any money must sign a form. (M102-0 form)

Campaign Finance Report forms are available at the Elections Office.

Record Keeping and Reporting Software is available from the Office of Campaign and Political Finance free of charge. For further information, contact OCPF at 800-462-OCPF.

Financial disclosure filings are kept at the Elections Office in the Town Hall and are open to public review.
