Highway Division
Highway
The Highway division is responsible for over 120 miles
of highways, nearly 50 miles of sidewalks, snow removal,
street sweeping, etc. The division employs 12 personnel.
They are responsible for the following: maintenance
of 120 miles of streets, up to 50 miles of sidewalks,
approximately 5,000 catch basins, regulatory sign maintenance,
snow removal, street sweeping, drainage repair, litter
cleanup, landscaping on town-owned property, and many
other tasks.
Forestry
The Town's Urban Forestry program consists of: periodic
inspection and trimming of all public shade trees, tree
removal and planting activities, and insect and disease
control. A properly maintained urban forest can lead
to increased property values, amelioration of unsightly
views leading to town beautification, and reduced heating/cooling
bills.
At present there are minimum Town-sponsored tree planting
efforts. With nearly 50 trees being removed each year
due to insect/disease or decay, and none being replanted,
large open spaces suitable for new trees are available.
Thus a vigorous tree planting program will be implemented
with the goal of at least 50 new trees being planted
annually. Tree planting efforts will concentrate on
"gateway" areas of town, at sites where trees
have been removed in the recent past, and where residents
request new trees.
Composting
Leaf and yard waste are composted at a site located on Plain Street. During the growing season (May–October), the Compost site is open on Saturdays. The site is also open in April and October on Saturdays and Sundays for residents to bring in their yard waste materials.
