FY 2012 and Beyond
"A Time For Planning"
Dear Residents,
As you are well aware, the economy of the past two years has had significant and detrimental effects on many of you, as well as the operation of our town. The downturn in the economy has resulted in a significant reduction in revenue to the town both through local receipts and State Aid. Unfortunately the demand for services has not diminished and in some cases, it has increased.
In the past we have constructed a budget and when we finally receive our State Aid estimate, we scramble during a short period of time to make necessary cuts to balance the budget. The action has been completely reactionary.
Every year we have to provide a five-year forecast. Unfortunately, the outlook is not good; it is bleak.
We have to stop reacting, and we must start planning. In that effort, we have formed a focus group of people to evaluate suggestions for reducing costs and increasing revenues. The group has been soliciting suggestions from every feasible avenue and are analyzing and evaluating each and every suggestion in an open, thorough, and unbiased manner.
We have held meetings with department heads, all elected and appointed officials, RTM, unions, the business community and the news media. Our effort is to make everyone aware of the severity of the situation and to solicit ideas. No idea is a bad idea.
We want to reach out to you for any suggestions you may have. This web page provides links to a list of suggestions that have been submitted thus far and a simple form you can download and use for submittal of your ideas. If you are able to forward a suggestion, we ask that you drop it off at the Board of Selectmen’s office at Town Hall.
Please help us. If you have an idea that has not been submitted, let us know. We cannot afford to leave any stone unturned.
Thank you,
Mark Fisher
Town Administrator
